The Den

Duffryn Food Co-op

The Duffryn Food Co-op is run by a local group of volunteers who provide low cost produce for the local community.  £2.00 buys you a bag of either Vegetables, Fruit or Salad.  We purchase from a local wholesaler and the project works on a 'no profit' basis.  You get it for what it costs and not a penny more!

We are always looking for new customers as well as new volunteers.  Orders are placed a week in advance either at Duffryn Community Link, Nightingale Court, Forest Children's Centre or Duffryn Infant and Junior Schools. You can also place orders for the following week at The Den when you collect your orders.

The project runs from The Den at 7, Sandpiper Way, every Wednesday morning between 9am and 12noon.

The project was originally set up in 2004 as a project between The Rural Regeneration Unit, Newport Local Health Board and Duffryn Community Link.

We continue to recieve regular and much valued support from Newport Local Health Board whom we have worked closely with on several projects relating to health matters. Many of these projects have been successfully piloted here in Duffryn and later 'run out' in other areas.

Parents of the children who attend our Infant and Junior schools will have seen their children bring home a small basket of fruit.  These fruit parcels are funded by Newport Local Health Board and distributed through Duffryn Food Co-op.  We try to re-inforce the 'Health Eating Message'  The Wednesday evening Performing Arts Sessions also provide fresh fruit free of charge to the young people who attend.

Duffryn Community Link appreciates and understands the importance of strong partnership working. Many young Mums in the Tredegar Park Ward will have attended a variety of training courses and will recognise the names of Bev Pader-Jones, Denise Cox, Jane Ellor and Liz Davies, all of whom work either for The Big Sister Project or Sure Start and carry out great work in the ward.

We really are short of volunteers for this project, come along and support a project, run by local people for local people. Look forward to seeing you!

Newport Youth Service Streets Ahead Project
The project works over a 12 week period with young people aged 16-25yrs who are unemployed and not accessing education or training. The project aims to offer practical support and guidance in am informal setting for those young people at risk of dropping out of the system. The team offers practical courses and one to one mentoring sessions, which build self-esteem and confidence and is delivered through a 12 week program; young people have the opportunity to gain qualifications, are exposed to new experiences, learn some basic skills and are encouraged to make formal decisions about their future, whether in education, training or employment. Young people are tracked for the next year and if the young people falter we can re-integrate them back on the project.
